2003 "New York Trilobites"
CMMFC members and authors of the "Beginners Corner" section of the club's newsletter Jayson Kowinsky and Amy Lore recently took a trip hunting for trilobites near the famous 18 mile creek locality in New York. As you will see, they had a very successful outing!!
trilo1 is a 3 some plate (minus a head), it shows why its a good reason to bring your trilobites back with as much matrix as possible. All that we saw was the headless one in the center, while cleaning with baking soda, 2 enrolled ones appeared! The enrolled ones are visible from both sides of the rock.
trilo2 is a trilobite with a head bent to the other side of the rock, an air abrasive nightmare!
trilo3 are 3 enrolled trilobites...
trilo4 is kind of neat, its an enrolled one sideways on matrix, the head is sticking out of the rock, so it "peeks" at you.
trilo5 is one of the prone ones, the matrix was getting to thin to take the rest of the head out.
trilo6a is a plate of 2 enrolled ones.
trilo6b is a close up
trilo7 is an enrolled one, and part of a mangled one (it didn't survive the trip home).
trilo8 is the other prone one, its on a big slab and so didn't scan so well. The head developed a crack, and I had to stop air blasting it out of the matrix.
Finally, Crinoid1 is a mangled crinoid, the head of it looks like it decomposed before fossilizing, there are lots of pieces of the calyx part, and it sticks out of the rock, but its mostly decomposed. Also, there is an enrolled trilobite on the other side beside the crinoid. I am going to air blast through the rock, so one side of it shows on the crinoid side. |
