SUMMER CAMP REGISTRATION IS OPEN.

Little Minnows

Thursday morning program for pre-schoolers 3-5. Activities are age appropriate. Sessions meet in the museum’s classroom from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Fees are $4 for members and $5 for non-members. Pre-registration encouraged. Call 410-326-2042 ext. 41

Young Salts

Young Salts is a Saturday program for children 4 to 6 years old who like to learn while having fun.  One Saturdays a month, your young salt is welcome to join us in learning about local topics.   Recent sessions have included sharks, fossils, lighthouses, and weird creatures of the bay.

Sessions include a craft, activity or game, and special snack.  The two-hour sessions are held from 10:00 a.m. to noon and from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the museum's classroom.

YOUNG SALTS REGISTRATION

Registration forms and fees must be received by the Monday prior to each program.

The program fee is $8 per child for museum members and $10 per child for non-members.

To register by website/mail: download registration form and mail it with your payment to Young Salts, Calvert Marine Museum, PO Box 97, Solomons, Maryland 20688.

To register in person: Leave your registration form with your payment at the Education Office located on the 3rd floor of the Exhibition Building.

A refund will be provided if the program is already full or you cancel your registration by the Friday before the registration deadline.

We will notify you if we cannot fulfill your request. Otherwise, assume you are registered. We will confirm your registration if you give us your email address on the registration form.

From life in a puddle to creating your own tornado, from living in it to floating on it, campers will explore this remarkable substance in its many forms. Includes a trip to Battle Creek Cypress Swamp.

Strange Creatures of the Deep-  Full    Call for waiting list.

What strange creatures lurk in the depths of the oceans and lakes of the Earth? How are these animals able to survive in such a cold and dark environment? Campers will explore these questions by using resources at the museum, seining or fishing in the nearby waters of the Chesapeake Bay and the Patuxent River, and by visiting the National Aquarium in Baltimore.  9a.m.-2p.m.     $70 Members, $80 Non-Members

What Floats Your Boat
?

This is an on the water experience as campers learn all about boats and boating. Get ready to learn how to handle a motorboat, sail a remote controlled sailboat, and build and test your own cardboard boat. Other activities include knot tying, anchoring, seamanship, boat safety, navigation and docking. On Saturday, families are invited to witness the cardboard boat regatta in the museum's boat basin.

Hiking Through History

Here's a great opportunity for your child to discover the history that lies right next door and get some exercise in the process. Campers will learn about Southern Maryland's involvement in the Civil War as they visit Point Lookout State Park; get a glimpse into the 18th century life of the landed gentry at Sotterley: and learn about the heyday of railroad and steam ship and great resort at Chesapeake Beach by visiting the Chesapeake Beach Railway Museum.

Testing the Bay

Campers will become bay scientists and test the salinity, pH, and temperature of the bay and some of its tributaries. They'll learn how to test, and what the results tell scientist about the health of the bay. We'll look at some native animals as indicators of health, too.

There's Something Fishy Here

Explore below the surface to discover the creatures that live in our local waters. What do they eat? How do they live? What can we learn by studying them? Campers will catch and dissect some of these animals to learn more about them.

Aliens in the Neighborhood

The state of the bay may not be good for some native species, but it is great for some invaders! Campers will look at some of the animals and plants that have been introduced to the bay, learn what the impacts have bee, and what can be done about them.

Got Bugs in Your Sleeping Bag

Bay Trek Overnight-Come prepared for an outdoor overnight adventure. First, a project to clean up the museum's butterfly garden and replant it fo the butterflies. As part of this special overnight, Bay Trekkers will take a look at some of the things that may be going bump in the night. We'll have a picnic supper, have some camp treats, tell some tall tales and sleep under the stars.
5pm-9am           $30 Members, $35 Non- Members

The Museum is partnering with the Calvert County Public Schools to offer a Maryland Department of Education Summer Center Program for gifted students. Designed for middle school students, the program will give young people a chance to be junior paleontologists exploring and analyzing the fossils of Calvert Cliffs. Birthday Parties at the Calvert Marine Museum For Members Only!

Come have your birthday party with us! Our birthdays accommodate a maximum of 15 children and 5 adults. The fee includes:

  • Admission to the museum

  • Your choice of birthday theme

  • A goodie bag from the store for each child

  • Reserved space for your party

  • Museum T-shirt for the birthday girl or boy

CMM Birthday Parties are two hours. Every party includes a theme related craft or activity, game, song, and story or puppet play. The last 45 minutes we reserve the party room for you to have food, cake, ice cream and presents. You are responsible for bringing all party supplies and refreshments and for clean up.

We also offer a special birthday Cruising Aboard the Wm. B. Tennison. This party can accommodate up to 38 people, and is great for any age. You can take an hour long ride, and have your cake and gifts on board. Fee includes admission to the museum for all participants.

Tennison Cruise (1 hour) $250

Overnight Adventures At the Calvert Marine Museum

Want to experience the Calvert Marine Museum is a whole new way? Try our overnight programs. Designed for groups of 10 to 20, overnights offer an in-depth museum experience mixed with behind-the-scenes fun. It’s also a good way for scouts to earn “Try-Its” and badges. Our overnights take place in two locations: the Exhibition Building at the museum or the Cove Point Lighthouse.

Fees for Overnights
Overnight programs are available over Saturday nights only. The cost is $25 per person, and includes admission to the museum, an interpreter lead program and activity, a pizza dinner and a continental breakfast. A non-refundable $25 registration fee is required with your registration form. Payment is due in two installments: 50% one month prior to your visit and the balance one week prior. From May through October, you have the option of participating in a one-hour boat trip on the Wm. B. Tennison, on Saturday afternoon for an additional charge of $7 adult, $4 for children 12 & under.

Overnights at Cove Point Lighthouse
The Cove Point Lighthouse, built in 1828, is Maryland’s oldest continuously operating lighthouse. In 2000, the U.S. Coast Guard turned the lighthouse over to the museum. Overnights can take place from April through November. You may either camp outside on the grounds or sleep inside the keeper’s house. Bathroom and kitchen facilities are available.

Programs at the Lighthouse
An interpreter will lead a tour of the lighthouse facilities. There are two lighthouse program choices, one for children over 12 and adults and a second designed for children 7 - 12. Participants will be given a museum pass be used either on Saturday prior to coming to the lighthouse or on Sunday following your overnight experience.

Programs at the Museum
After spending the afternoon touring the museum’s various exhibits, visitors will have a pizza dinner, then spend the night in the Discovery Room and Mezzanine areas of the museum. Kitchen and bathroom facilities are available. A large screen TV may be used for movies.

An interpreter will lead the group on a tour of the museum, followed by a crafts activity.

How to Schedule Your Overnight Visit
First, call 410-326-2042 ext. 41 to reserve your date. Then send in the reservation form and non-refundable $25 fee to hold your reservation. You can download the reservation form or we will be happy to mail you one. Our Group Services Coordinator will work with you to ensure your overnight experience at the Calvert Marine Museum is exactly what you are looking for.

Fossil Field Experience
A Saturday program for persons 8 years and older who like to learn while having fun.  Only $20.00 per person!

Time: 11:00 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Cost: $20/person (an adult must accompany any children and please,
no children under 8)

Registration must be received the Monday
before the program to reserve a position.

The group will assemble at the museum and the program will begin at 11 a.m.  If you wish, you may arrive early (after 10 a.m.) and visit the museum's other exhibits before the program begins.

Between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., participants will utilize the paleontology hall and teaching collections to learn about the ancient Miocene sea, the formation of Calvert Cliffs, and the paleontological techniques used to uncover the evidence of life in the region which existed some 10 to 20 million years ago.

Bring a picnic lunch to eat in the museum's picnic area (or dine off-site) from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.  If you have a few extra minutes, you may wish to visit the museum's Discovery Room or the Gift Shop before journeying to a site at Calvert Cliffs at 1:30 p.m. (we will travel caravan-style in our individual cars).

From 2 to 4 p.m., members of the group will have a chance to put their knowledge and skills to work when they comb the beach at Calvert Cliffs in search of their own fossils.  A museum interpreter will accompany your group and be available to discuss your discoveries with you and answer any questions you may have.

Wear appropriate clothing for beach combing, and bring a change of dry clothes if desired.

Special Note: While children (8 or older) can attend, they must be accompanied by a paying adult. There is a classroom lecture on the geology of the Bay and the Miocene epoch, which is not geared towards children. Please be sure of your child's interest in fossils before registering him or her.

You will be notified by telephone or mail and a refund will be given if the program is canceled by the museum, or the program is filled by the time your registration is received, otherwise no refunds are allowed.

Calvert County services are available to persons with disabilities.  please let us know upon registering if you or a member of your family has any special needs so that our teaching staff may make appropriate arrangements.
