Fossil Field Experience
This program is designed for people who want to learn more about fossils: where to find them, how to identify them, what they can tell us about the past. This program is for adults and children 8 and older accompanied by an adult. The group will assemble at Cove Point Lighthouse at 9:00 a.m. You will meet our trained guides and you will learn about the Miocene fossils that you will be searching for on the beach. You will have beach time until 11:30 a.m. You will then leave the premises to eat lunch on your own and to commute to the Calvert Marine Museum. You will be given an admission sticker good for the remainder of the day.
You may either bring a bag lunch to eat on the grounds of the Calvert Marine Museum or you may eat at one of the many restaurant choices available to you.
You will then meet your guide at the Calvert Marine Museum at 1:00 p.m. to discuss your finds and to utilize the Paleo Hall to learn about the ancient Miocene sea, the formation of Calvert Cliffs and talk to trained Docents in our Paleo lab. At 2:00 p.m. you are welcome to tour the museum on your own.
Wear appropriate clothing for beach combing, and bringing a change of clothes is recommended. Pre-registration required at least two business days before the program; there is a $5 charge for cancellations. Please email mccormmj@co.cal.md.us for registration. $20 per person.
