Welcome to the Underwater Worlds of the Patuxent River

Here at the Calvert Marine Museum we feature the diverse wonders of a true Estuary from the fresh water inhabitants of the head waters of the Patuxent to the brackish inhabitants of the mouth of the Patuxent, all that share a life with the Chesapeake Bay.

Experience the diverse habitats as you journey through the Patuxent River.

Observe a close up look at some of the many fish and invertebrates that call the Patuxent River their home.

A view through some windows will allow you to take a sneak peek into the back up areas. To experience what it’s like to take care of these animals on a daily basis.

After you have seen the smaller completely aquatic animals of the Patuxent River, your journey will lead you to witness the antics of our most popular mammal inhabitants at the Calvert Marine Museum, our two River Otters!

River Otters

Our River Otters enjoy playing in their large outdoor habitat, where they can swim in their 9000-gallon pool or go romping around on the terrestrial side.

Continuing with your outdoors’ experience right near the River Otter habitat you will embark on a true Salt Marsh exploration.

Here you can see many different creatures as the water’s tides come and go.

If you’re lucky you may get a glimpse at one of the beautiful Blue or Green Herons that frequent our protected marsh area.

If you haven’t had enough of this enticing aquatic journey don’t forget to visit our feature areas, near the front of the Museum,

Secrets of the Mermaid’s Purse and the best view for our smallest visitors our exhibit in the Discovery Room.

All of our exhibits are ever changing and full of movement, so each visit you will most likely discover something new!
