Capt. John Smith's 1608 Chesapeake Voyage

Outreach and Proposed Book

Susan Schmidt welcomes opportunities to talk to any groups along the route about natural and cultural history of the Bay. To refresh her knowledge of estuarine ecology, on my expedition she will consult scientists at marine labs and educators at environmental education centers that ring the Bay. Wherever she lands, she will participate in community activities to meet the Bay's shoreline citizens.

Dr. Heather Huyck, chief historian planning the 400th commemoration for the National Park Service at Jamestown, has encouraged her research on John Smith and this Chesapeake expedition. Tom Horton, environmental reporter for the Baltimore Sun, who lives near Salisbury, is an advisor. Educators at Chesapeake Bay Foundation in Annapolis are mentors, and she will dock at CBF centers located at Tangier, Smith, and Fox Islands.

Her book, LANDFALL, will combine cultural geography and natural history with an adventure story of this expedition. The natural order of her book will follow Smith's voyage geographically.
