About CMM

Calvert Marine Museum Volunteers

For almost thirty years, volunteers have been an integral part of the museum. From its founding in 1970 by volunteers, to the "unpaid" staff of today, this institution could not function without them. Museum volunteers are needed in many departments to provide meaningful and valuable services within those departments, as well as to contribute ideas to the museum.

Departments requiring volunteer services are Administration, Museum Store, Development Office, Education Department, Paleontology, Estuarine Biology. Exhibit Department, Physical Plant Department, Maritime History, and Library and Archives.

Cove Point Lighthouse Interpreters

Want to share a bit of history in your own backyard?

The Calvert Marine Museum is looking for volunteers to serve as interpreters at Cove Point Lighthouse during the 2007 season. If you love lighthouses, especially this one, and want to share your knowledge, this is your chance. Or, if you’ve always wanted to know more about this historic site we’d like to give you the opportunity to do so. Information and training is provided, scheduling is arranged a month in advance, and schedules are flexible; even a commitment of four afternoons a month is welcome.

The CPLH will be open to visitors seven days a week from 1 to 4 pm during June, July, and August. If you are interested in volunteering your time please contact Sherry Reid at 410-326-2042 ext. 19 or by
email. We’d love to hear from you.

Young Salts Assistant
Length of Term: Indefinitely
Department: Education
Time of Service: Saturday, bimonthly 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Duties: Assisting staff with Young Salts program. The program runs from 10:00 a.m. until noon and has between 10 and 15 children ages four to six. We cover various topics with lots of coloring, worksheets, crafts, and use of museum displays. Specially, you would be assisting with the crafts and worksheets, bathroom break, snack time, and keeping track of the children when outside of the classroom (the old hiking theory, a leader and a sweeper). In addition, you would help with the set-up and breakdown of the classroom (moving little tables and chairs like those in the Discovery Room). Lesson plans are written and taught by staff. This is a fairly easy duty, but extremely helpful to the staff.

Duties: This position works behind the information desk in the museum lobby, though one can move about the museum to suit the publics' and other volunteers' needs. Information Hosts work directly with the public, answering questions, selling memberships, and watching over exhibits when other volunteers need a break. Training is provided.
