Docents are a very important part of the Calvert Marine Museum, working in all of the gallery spaces acting as guides for the general public. At the Marine Museum, Junior Docents focus on presenting information in the form of artifact carts, as well as educating about the animals in the Discovery Room or Skates and Rays.
The Junior Docent program is a two-year commitment for those interested in volunteering at the museum and are rising 8th and 9th graders (between the ages of 13-15). The chosen candidates are invited to attend the Junior Docent Training week where the participants are shown how to begin conversations with visitors, gallery content material, proper ways to handle the animals and artifacts, as well as scheduling - in short, everything to ensure they are properly prepared to represent the museum.
The application forms include an application, two teacher recommendation forms and a parental permission form. The application materials will go live on January 10th, 2022 and the application period ends on May 6th, 2022. After the application period ends, all application materials are reviewed and interviews with selected candidates will be scheduled. All forms must be submitted to be considered for the program. If the applicant homeschools, any non-relative adult who can speak to the applicant's academic skills may submit a teacher recommendation form.
Junior Docent Training week will be June 20 - June 23, 2022 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.
