FEBRUARY EVENTS AT THE CALVERT MARINE MUSEUM
Beat the winter blues and visit the Calvert Marine Museum in February. Check the website at www.calvertmarinemuseum.com for a complete listing of activities for all members of the family. On Saturdays and Sundays, check out the special public programs offered at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. that day.
Friday, February 5 - First Free Friday
5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. The museum is open free to the public with docents in every gallery. This month will feature a free community yoga class by GROW, a yoga experience that blends natural beauty into a physical practice. GROW with the flow from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. in the Harms Gallery. Please bring your own yoga mat.
Sunday, February 7 – Milt Diggins Lecture
3:00 p.m. - Harms Gallery. Milt Diggins is the author of a new book entitled Stealing Freedom along the Mason-Dixon Line: Thomas McCreary, the Notorious Slave Catcher from Maryland. Based on modern-day historical sleuthing, Diggins tells the story of Thomas McCreary, providing a close-up view of the toxic effects the debate over slavery had on the country in the years leading up to the Civil War. Free program held in partnership with the Calvert County Historical Society.

Sea Squirts: Ocean Diving! 10:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Children 18 months to 3 years old and their caregivers are invited to come learn about the animals that are hiding in the deep. (Switching to winter hours: offered only once at 10:30 am.)
Saturday, February 13 – Monday, February 15 ~ Jewelry Trunk Show
10:15 a.m. – 4:45 p.m. The Museum Store presents an exquisite selection of jewelry that highlights both new artists and perennial favorites. Get a free box of sea salt caramels with a $50 jewelry purchase.
Monday, February 15 - President’s Day
11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. CMM Volunteer Ed Gies will show his private collection of artifacts, autographed photographs, and share personal stories about his father, Morgan Gies. Mr. Gies was a member of the Secret Service responsible for the presidential fleet, and often served as driver for presidents from Roosevelt to Johnson. Parts of this collection are now housed at the Henry Ford Museum and the Truman Presidential Library. Younger visitors can try the Maryland symbol scavenger hunt to discover how many of Maryland’s symbols can be found in the museum; ongoing throughout the day. All free with museum admission.
Thursday, February 25 - Little Minnows
10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Whales are Mammals Too! Children 3 to 5 years old are invited to use their senses to investigate how these giants of the sea adapt to living in the water. CMM members are free; $5 for non-members.
Saturday, February 27 - Build a Toy Boat
2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Make your own toy boat in the Maritime History Hall with sessions starting on the half hour. $2 donation requested with museum admission.

The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $9.00 for adults, $7.00 for seniors, military with valid I.D. and AAA members, and $4.00 for children ages 5 - 12; children under 5 and museum members are always admitted free.
