YOUTH ART MONTH CELEBRATED
AT THE CALVERT MARINE MUSEUM

Youth Art Month has been celebrated in the state of Maryland for over 40 years. The Calvert Marine Museum has hosted an art exhibit for more than a decade in partnership with Calvert County Public Schools. Calvert County’s young artists in kindergarten through high school interpreted this year’s theme entitled, “Portraits of the Chesapeake Bay.” See the work on display now through the end of March in the museum lobby.

Heather Smith, Calvert County Public School Youth Art Liaison, has worked closely with Tim Scheirer of the museum’s Exhibits Department for many years on this project. Art is an essential part of every child’s academic and social development and enhances all aspects of a student’s life. Elementary, middle and high schools of Calvert County Public Schools are represented in the show. “Growing up near the water has had a beautiful effect on me. As a young girl I loved running through the bay water and trying to find cool souvenirs in the sand. My most fondest memory and what inspired my piece, ‘Asphyxiated’, was going to the beach in my neighborhood to clear my mind when it felt like it was flooding over with ideas,” says Taylor Williams, 12th grade student at Huntingtown High School.

The opening reception was held during the museum’s First FREE Friday event on March 4 with refreshments and entertainment by Calvert High School’s Chamber Orchestra. The generous support of the Calvert Marine Museum Exhibits Department, Calvert County Board of Education, and the Board of County Commissioners help to make art thrive throughout Calvert County.

The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $9.00 for adults, $7.00 for seniors, military with valid I.D. and AAA members, and $4.00 for children ages 5 - 12; children under 5 and museum members are always admitted free.
