MAY EVENTS AT THE CALVERT MARINE MUSEUM

May is marvelous at the Calvert Marine Museum with activities and events for visitors of all ages. Visit the website at www.calvertmarinemuseum.com for a complete schedule of programs.

New Temporary Exhibit Opens in the Mezzanine Gallery
Vanished Steamboats: The Maritime Art of C. Leslie Oursler captures the spirit of a bygone age through his paintings, drawings, and ship models. This exhibition of selected works from the museum’s collection, supplemented by items from the collection of guest curator and steamboat historian, Jack Shaum, will be displayed in the Mezzanine Gallery from May 7 through the end of 2016.

Saturday, May 7 – Solomons Maritime Festival
10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. FREE! Celebrate Southern Maryland traditions! Antique boats and motors, master maritime carvers, home crafts and cooking demonstrations, traditional music and storytelling, children’s games and crafts, and boat rides offer something for all members of the family!

Sunday, May 8 – Mother’s Day Brunch Cruise
11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. What better way to say ‘You’re Special’ than a relaxing cruise and brunch aboard the Wm. B. Tennison. Adults $25, children 12 and under $15. Preregistration required. Call 410-326-2042, ext. 41 to register.

Sunday, May 9 – Mother’s Day Evening Cruise
5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Enjoy a perfect ending to Mom’s special day with heavy hors d’ oeuvres and a cruise aboard the Wm. B. Tennison. Adults $25, children 12 and under $15. Preregistration required. Call 410-326-2042, ext. 41 to register.

Tuesday, May 10 - Thursday, May 12 and Wednesday, May 18 – Sea Squirts
10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Seahorses – Who Carries the Babies? Head of a horse, tail of a monkey, and pouch like a kangaroo, what exactly is a seahorse? Come and learn about our seahorses, one of the most mystical animals in our aquarium. Free drop-in program for children 18-months to three years and their caregivers.

Sunday, May 15 – No William B. Tennison cruises scheduled.

Wednesday, May 18 – National Museum Day
The museum is open and free to the public from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Thursday, May 19 – Pub Night at CMM
7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Join well-known chantey singer, Myron Peterson, of Ship’s Company for a rollicking evening of sea chanteys and hearty cheer. This will be a regular monthly gathering through September. $5 cover charge. Wine and beer available for sale.

Saturday, May 21 – World Fish Migration Day
10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Discover the amazing journeys of Chesapeake Bay migratory fish. Enjoy activities for all ages. View the film “Damnation”; check out NRG Chalk Point Generating Station’s live sturgeon exhibit; try out the hook and ladder activity, test your knowledge with the new fish migration exhibit, and enjoy scheduled games for kids. Free with museum admission.

Saturday, May 21 – Fossil Field Experience
9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Come explore the fossils of Calvert Cliffs with a trained museum educator. For ages 8 and up. Cost is $20 and includes museum admission. Space is limited; preregistration required. Call 410-326-2042, ext. 41 to register.

Thursday, May 26 – Little Minnows
10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Marsh Migration Which animals move into the marsh in the spring? And who moves out? See how things are changing as the weather is getting warmer outside. For children ages 3 to 5 years. Members are free; $5 for non-members (cash only).

Saturday, May 28 – Dee of St. Mary’s Public Sail
2:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. Sail on the Dee of St. Mary’s leaving from the museum dock. Fee is $25 for ages 12 and up, $15 for children 8 – 12. No children under 8 please. Preregistration required, call 410-326-2042 ext. 41 to register.
