MARCH EVENTS AT THE CALVERT MARINE MUSEUM

Spring is in the air at the Calvert Marine Museum. Programs and activities are planned for all ages in March. Visit the website at www.calvertmarinemuseum.com for a complete listing.

Friday, March 3 – First FREE Friday and Youth Art Show

5 p.m. – 8 p.m. The museum is open and free to the public with docents in every gallery. Celebrate Youth Art Month with “Portraits of the Chesapeake” featuring beautiful artwork by Calvert County K-12 art students, on display in the lobby. The opening reception begins at 5 p.m. Hear Bone and String, a young Calvert-based band, providing audiences with a glimpse into history with traditional music and songs of the sea, in the Harms Gallery starting at 6 p.m.

Tuesday, March 7 and Thursday, March 9 - Sea Squirts

10 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Ship Shape! FREE drop-in program for children 18 months to 3 years and their caregivers.

Sunday, March 12 – Private Members’ Party

3 p.m. – 6 p.m. CMM members are invited for an afternoon at the Museum. Go on a scavenger hunt for the chance to win prizes, enjoy lite fare and drink, meet staff and talk about everyday life at the museum, and save 20% off in the Museum Store.

Wednesday, March 15 – Spring Homeschool Day

10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Maritime History Comes Alive! is the theme for the Spring 2017 Homeschool Day. The day is designed for children age nine through 15, but all ages can discover something new. The museum’s Maritime History Gallery spans human habitation along the Patuxent River from the Patuxent Indians to modern times. Games, role play, interactive tours, and hands-on activities ensure that participants will enjoy the experience and learn some important facts about local history. Thursday, March 16 – Sea Squirts

10 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Ship Shape! FREE drop-in program for children 18 months to 3 years and their caregivers.

Friday, March 17 – The Benjie Porecki Trio

7 p.m. in the Harms Gallery. The Maritime Performance Series presents The Benjie Porecki Trio paying homage to jazz as one of the true American art forms. The trio renders classic jazz standards with fire and intensity. Doors open at 6 p.m. with beer and wine available for sale. Tickets are $15 online, $20 at the door and available at www.bit.ly//MaritimeConcerts.

Thursday, March 23 – Little Minnows

10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Cloud Pictures. For children ages 3 to 5 years old and their caregivers. Fee is $5, CMM members are FREE.

Saturday, March 25 – Build a Toy Boat

2 p.m. – 4 p.m. Make a toy boat in the Maritime History Hall with sessions starting on the half hour. $2 donation requested. Museum admission required.

Sunday, March 26 – CMM Members Trip

8:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. CMM members will ride a luxury charter bus to Washington, D.C. (and the Cherry Blossoms) and the Alexandria Waterfront. Enjoy a two-hour round-trip narrated water cruise highlighting historic sites such as the: Jefferson Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the Memorial Bridge between the historic seaports of Old Town Alexandria and Georgetown. After the cruise, participants will have 2 ½ hours on their own to enjoy the delights of Old Town Alexandria. Grab lunch, visit the Torpedo Factory, or browse the shops. Cost is $50 per person. Friday, March 31 – Otter Breakfast

9 a.m. Learn about otter enrichment and their habitat. Go behind the scenes to speak with a keeper and observe a feeding. A continental breakfast will be provided. Children must be at least 8 years old and accompanied by an adult to participate. Fee is $20 per person, $15 for members and includes museum admission. Email mccormmj@co.cal.md.us to register.

 Friday, March 31 – OtterMania

10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Celebrate the museum’s favorite mammal! Dance the “Swim” with the otter mascots, listen to otter tales from an “otterly” terrific story teller. Meet the Otter Keepers at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Watch a training session with an aquarist at 3 p.m. to learn how the otters are trained. A $2 donation is requested for face painting. Museum admission applies; members are FREE.

The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $9.00 for adults, $7.00 for seniors, military with valid I.D. and AAA members, and $4.00 for children ages 5 - 12; children under 5 and museum members are always admitted free.
