NOVEMBER EVENTS

Fall is in the air and November is a perfect time to visit the Calvert Marine Museum. Activities and events are planned for all members of the family. Visit the website at www.calvertmarinemuseum.com for a complete list of programs.

Sunday, November 5 – “On Watch” Memorial Service

2 p.m. at the site of the “On Watch” statue at the end of Dowell Road, Dowell, Maryland. Join us to thank all of our veterans for their service. Refreshments served following the program.

Tuesday, November 7, Thursday, November 9 and Wednesday, November 15 – Sea Squirts

10 - 10:30 a.m. Theme is Lighthouse Discovery. Free drop-in program for children 18-months to 3 years and their caregivers. Space is limited; if the session is full, another program will be offered at 11 a.m.

Thursday, November 9 – “Where Did We Stay? 1890 to 1950”

7 – 8 p.m. in the Harms Gallery. Presented by Grace Mary Brady as part of the “At the Water’s Edge” Lecture Series. Brady currently serves as the Historic Preservation Planner for St. Mary’s County Department of Land Use and Growth Management. Her passion for local history, historic preservation, and collecting artifacts led her to create the Bayside History Museum in North Beach, Maryland more than 10 years ago. Join her to learn about the boarding houses and hotels where folks stayed in Calvert County back in the day when they came by train and steamboat. The series is sponsored by Bayside History Museum, Calvert Library, Calvert Marine Museum, and Chesapeake Beach Railway Museum.

Friday, November 10 – STEM Festival Friday

10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. CMM is participating in the STEM Festival! Ongoing learning sessions include exploring simple machines that make work on a boat easier, the aerodynamics of sailing, and exploring buoyancy. FREE with museum admission.

Friday, November 10 – Maritime Performance Series presents Simple Gifts

7 p.m. in the Harms Gallery. Two women plus twelve instruments equals one heck of a good time. Combining tradition with innovation, Simple Gifts creates some of the finest arrangements in folk music today: swing fiddle creeps into a Romanian dance, spoons show up in an Irish reel, and a blues lick introduces a Klezmer melody. Based in the hills of central Pennsylvania, these women play an amazing array of instruments, switching with ease among fiddle, mandolin, banjo, guitar, guitjo, recorders, bowed psaltery, hammered dulcimer, baritone fiddle, guitar, and percussion. Tickets are $15 online, $20 at the door and available at www.bit.ly//MaritimeConcerts. Doors open at 6 p.m. with beer and wine for sale.

Saturday, November 11 – Veterans Day

The Museum is open and admission is FREE for active military, veterans, and their families.

Thursday, November 16 – Gills Club

5:30 – 7 p.m. FREE program designed for girls ages 7 – 12 interested in learning more about sharks. Gills Club is a STEM-focused program from the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy. Preregistration is required. Register now at www.bit.ly//GillsClubRegistration. For more information, email Mindy.Quinn@calvertcountymd.gov.
