Spring is in the air at the Calvert Marine Museum. Programs and activities are planned for all ages in March. Visit the website at www.calvertmarinemuseum.com for a complete listing.
Friday, March 2 – First FREE Friday and Youth Art Show
5 – 8 p.m. The museum is open and FREE to the public with docents in every gallery. Celebrate Youth Art Month with “Portraits of the Chesapeake” featuring beautiful artwork by Calvert County K-12 art students, on display in the lobby. The opening reception is 5 – 6:30 p.m. Hear Calvert High School Chamber Orchestra in the Harms Gallery starting at 6 p.m.
Saturday, March 3 – CMM Fossil Club Meeting and Public Lecture
1 – 2:30 p.m. Join the Calvert Marine Museum Fossil Club for a monthly meeting in the third floor lounge. Meetings are open to the public; guests do not have to be a member to attend.
2:30 p.m. Dr. Olivier Lambert, Belgium fossil expert and paleontologist, will present: “Eocene to Pliocene deposits from the Pisco Basin (southern coast of Peru): a unique source of fossils to investigate major transitions in whale evolution” in the Harms Gallery. FREE and open to the public.

10 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Ship Shape! FREE drop-in program for children 18 month to 3 years and their caregivers. Space is limited; if the session is full, another program will be offered at 11 a.m.
Thursday, March 15 – Gills Club
5:30 – 7 p.m. FREE program designed for girl’s ages 7 – 12 interested in learning more about sharks. Gills Club is a STEM-focused program from the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy. Friday, March 16 – Nicole Zuraitis Quartet
7 p.m. The Maritime Performance Series presents the Nicole Zuraitis Quartet with an evening of jazz, pop, and classical music. Doors open at 6 p.m., with beer and wine available for sale. Tickets are $20 online, $25 at the door, and available at www.bit.ly//MaritimeConcerts.
Tuesday, March 20 – Museum Members Save 20%
10 – 11 a.m. Museum members are invited for coffee and donuts. Members enjoy a 20% discount in the Museum Store all day today and on the 20th of every month!
Wednesday, March 21 – Celebrate ART! Home School Day in Solomons
10 a.m. – 3 p.m. The Calvert Marine Museum (CMM) is partnering with Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center (AMG) for Homeschool Day 2018 with the theme, Celebrate Art! Homeschooled students are welcome to participate from 10 a.m. – 12 noon at CMM and 1 – 3 p.m. at AMG. Ideal for children in 5th – 8th grade, but all ages can discover something new. Pick up an interactive BINGO card at CMM, complete 5 tasks at both sites to earn BINGO, and turn it in at AMG for the chance to win a prize. The program is FREE with admission at both locations. 10 – 11 a.m. Dino-Power! The Mighty Dinosaurs. For children ages 3 to 5 years old and their caregivers. Fee is $5; members are FREE.
Thursday, March 22 – At the Water’s Edge Lecture Series presents Gambling
7 p.m. in the Harms Gallery. Grace Mary Brady will present “Gambling” with a focus on horse racing tracks that once existed in Calvert County. Here her fascinating story about a slot machine indictment case at Uncle Billie’s in North Beach. Detective Shawn Moses of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Department will discuss gambling cases in St. Mary’s County. FREE and open to the public.
Friday, March 23 – Exhibit Openings / Donor Recognition Night
5 – 7 p.m. Explore the new Dinosaurs of Maryland exhibit on the Mezzanine Level and the new Recreation Playground exhibit in the Maritime History Hall. Enjoy short lectures on each exhibit. FREE to the public.
Saturday, March 24 – Taste of Solomons
11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Celebrate the Spring Taste of Solomons in the Museum Store. Tickets are $4 each. The Museum Store is offering goodie bags with a real fossil for children.

Wednesday, March 28 - Meet the Lighthouse Keepers
11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Step back in time and meet Mr. and Mrs. Goeshy, the keepers of Drum Point Lighthouse from 1930-1931. Live character interactions with the Goeshy’s at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. will highlight aspects of life at DPLH, with a special focus on women lighthouse keepers in honor of Women’s History Month. FREE with admission.
Friday, March 30 – Miocene Fossil Exploration
10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Spend a day exploring the amazing fossils in our collection! Throughout the day, interpreter-guided activities in the Treasures from the Cliffs exhibit will allow you to touch Miocene Epoch fossils and practice preparing a fossil specimen. Make and take home your own
fossil imprint in sessions at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Appropriate for ages 4 and up. FREE with admission.
Saturday, March 31 – Fossil Egg Hunt
10 a.m. - 12 noon Back by popular demand! Look for eggs with real fossils inside, hidden throughout the museum. Participants will be given a container for egg collection; no baskets needed! Docents will be present to identify fossil finds. Excavate fossils from matrix, using paleontologists’ tools. For ages 3 – 10. FREE with admission.
Monday, April 2 – Plants and Pollinators
10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Explore the native plants on the museum grounds, from the salt marsh to the Children’s Maritime Garden. All participants who finish a plant scavenger hunt will receive a packet of pollinator-friendly native seeds! Check the Admissions Desk for special tour times (weather permitting). For ages 4 and up. FREE with admission.

The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $9.00 for adults, $7.00 for seniors, military with valid I.D. and AAA members, and $4.00 for children ages 5 - 12; children under 5 and museum members are always admitted free.
