SUMMER BOAT CAMP SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY
The Calvert Marine Museum has scholarships available to our popular boat building camp for children entering grades 6 – 8. The Patuxent Small Craft Guild, a club affiliated with the museum, is offering a full scholarship through the Melvin Conant Fund to a qualified student to attend this camp. The scholarship is need-based and requires a school recommendation.
In this camp, scheduled June 22 – 27, from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., youth build a 12-foot plywood canoe that they can take home with them and enjoy for years to come. In the process, they master basic woodworking and finishing skills. They also learn to operate a radio-controlled model sailboat and practice some of the maritime skills during a cruise on the draketail work boat.
The camp is followed by a boating safety course offered by the Spirit of America Boating Safety Program for middle school students. The course is run by St. Mary’s College of Maryland and the Sailing Center Chesapeake and sponsored by the National Water Safety Congress and the Spirit of America Foundation. At the end of this week-long program, participants will receive the State of Maryland boating safety certificate. There are three sessions of the boating safety course available.
To qualify for this scholarship, the applicant must be a middle school student in good standing, have a written teacher recommendation, and an interest in learning the skills offered in the camp. No prior experience is needed. Priority is given to students who have a financial need.
Please submit letters of interest and teacher recommendation letters by April 22, 2015 to sturrosa@co.cal.md.us or mail to Sherrod Sturrock, Calvert Marine Museum, P.O. Box 97, Solomons, Maryland 20688.
