LYME DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH
Did you know that Calvert County has the largest percentage of diagnosed Lyme patients in the state of Maryland? Did you know that Lyme disease cases have been reported in every state in the country? And that the disease is often misdiagnosed as other illnesses such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, or multiple sclerosis? Lyme disease is one of the most serious and controversial epidemics of our time. The Calvert Marine Museum (CMM) will host the award winning movie “Under Our Skin” on Wednesday, May 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the Harms Gallery.
Lyme Awareness Network, a grass roots Lyme activist group, is marking May, Lyme Awareness Month. Along with the “Under Our Skin” presentation at CMM, the Calvert Public Library, Prince Frederick, will follow up by showing “Under Our Skin Part 2: Emergence” on Tuesday May 12, at 6:30 p.m. during LYME AWARENESS NIGHT. “Take a bite out of Lyme” and get a little education, help spread awareness, while enjoying a night out. Both events will provide up-to-date information about Lyme Disease, links to help make educated decisions about the disease, diagnosis, treatments and prevention tips with a short Q&A after the movie.
The “Under Our Skin” series exposes a complex story of politics and conflict of interest among researchers, insurance companies and “Big Pharma”. Lyme physicians who successfully treat patients with unproven protocols are threatened with sanctions by state medical boards. Patients are left untreated and the disease continues to spread. These films provide a penetrating view into the science and politics of one of the most prevalent misunderstood and controversial illnesses of our time. It invites views into the heroic lives of people struggling with the disease and into the complex web at the intersection of science, medicine, and money.
The events are sponsored by the Lyme Awareness Network, Calvert Memorial Hospital, Calvert Marine Museum, Calvert Library - Prince Frederick, and The Pythian Sisters Southern Stars Temple #36.
