AUGUST EVENTS AT CMM

Summer is flying by! Put the Calvert Marine Museum on your list of places to visit before it’s time for back to school. Visit the website at www.calvertmarinemuseum.com for a complete listing of activities and events in August.

Friday, August 7 – First Free Friday
5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. The museum and Drum Point Lighthouse are open and free to the public. Enjoy music by GrooveSpan in the Harms Gallery starting at 6:00 p.m.; FREE 30-minute Tennison cruises sponsored by Community Bank of the Chesapeake.

Friday, August 7 - Dee of St. Mary’s Sunset Cruise
6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Relax with friends and learn about the history of both this traditional workboat and the life of a working waterman. Leaves from the museum dock. Bring a snack and libation of choice on board. (Children under 12 are not permitted on this sail.) Tickets are $25 each. Preregistration is required; call 410-326-2042 ext. 41 to register. Seating is limited.

Saturday, August 8 - Lighthouse Adventure Cruise: Southern Bay
7:45 a.m. Museum Dock. Participants will see six lighthouses as they cruise aboard a private charter boat. The cost is $130; $120 for members. Registration required 5 business days in advance. Call 410-326-2042 ext. 41 to register.

Saturday, August 8 - Pirate Pizza Cruise
11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Dress like a pirate and eat pizza on board the Wm. B. Tennison-Arggggh. $15 per person. Pre-registration required. Call 410-326-2042 ext. 41.

Saturday, August 8 – Build your own Secchi Disk
2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. in the Estuarine Biology Gallery. Make your own Secchi Disk. Use it to measure turbidity, or water clarity, one important measure of the health of our waterways. $1 donation requested with museum admission.

Tuesday, August 11 and Thursday, August 13 and Wednesday, August 19
10:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Sea Squirts: Chesapeake ABC. A free drop-in program for children 18-months to 3 years and their caregivers.

Saturday, August 15 – Fossil Field Experience
9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Go to a local beach with a trained educator to search for fossils. Get a special tour of the fossil hall. For ages 8 and up. Pre-registration required, $20 per person and includes museum admission. Space is limited. Call 410-326-2042 ext. 41.

Saturday, August 15 - Dee of St. Mary’s Public Sail
2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. with special guest Captain Jackie Russell. Sail on board the skipjack Dee leaving from the museum dock with Captain Jack sharing his stories about life as a waterman. Fee is $25 for ages 13 and up, $15 for children 8 – 12. No children under 8 please. Preregistration required, call 410-326-2042 ext. 41 to register. Seating is limited.

Saturday, August 22 – Toy Boat Building
2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Make your own toy boat in the Maritime History Hall with sessions starting on the half hour. $2 donation requested with museum admission.

Thursday, August 27 - Little Minnows
10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. C is for Crabs! A program for children age 3 – 5 and their caregivers. Fee is $5, free for members. Preregistration suggested. Call 410-326-2042 ext. 41.

Saturday, August 29 - Lore Oyster House Day
1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Stop by the J.C. Lore Oyster House in Solomons for on-going activities both in the oyster house and out on the dock. Try your hand at oyster tonging; learn to tie a towline and coil a rope; measure oysters and follow the path an oyster takes through the processing house from the loading dock to the shipping room. Learn about oyster anatomy with our giant soft sculpture oyster, Rock-E-Feller. Admission is free to the Oyster House.

The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $9.00 for adults, $7.00 for seniors, military with valid I.D. and AAA members, and $4.00 for children ages 5 - 12; children under 5 and museum members are always admitted free.
