The Calvert Marine Museum announces the 2015 Maritime Concert Series beginning on Friday, September 11 and continuing monthly through December. Friday, September 11 – JOHN MOCK performing From Sea to Shore
John Mock is an artist and the ocean and its coasts are his muse. From his native New England to the shores of Ireland and Scotland, John captures in music and story the heritage of the sea. John shares this heritage through his captivating concert presentations which include both traditional and original instrumental compositions performed on guitar, concertina, mandolin, and tin whistle. Audiences are charmed both by John’s music, and his storytelling, which animates the tunes with unforgettable characters. Sit back and enjoy the journey.
Friday, October 16 – CALICO JENNY: A Trio of Sultry Sirens
Janie Meneely and her trio, Calico Jenny, celebrate the maritime history, characters, and traditions of the Chesapeake Bay, while adding the ladies’ point of view and setting the record straight. Their songs and stories amble from ne’er-do-well sea captains to soulful ballads about the people who make a living working the water. The trio includes Meneely on vocals and guitar, Chelle Fulk on vocals and fiddle, and Molly Hickman on vocals, banjo and cello.
Friday, November 20 – BUMPER JACKSONS throws “a big, fat party”
Returning by popular demand after last year’s sold out performance, Bumper Jacksons’ early jazz and country repertoire paints America’s story from New Orleans’ brothels to Appalachian hollers. Unafraid to scrap together new sounds from forgotten 78’s, the Bumper Jacksons boldly and elegantly pay homage to the traditions while fashioning their own unique, DIY style. Recognized as DC’s “Best Traditional Folk Band” at the 2013 Washington Area Music Awards, the group has positioned themselves squarely at the helm of the young roots music scene in DC, pioneering a new, fresh take on American music, and all the while throwing one heck of a party.
Friday, December 18 – EVA performing The Turning of the Year
Celebrate the holidays with the international band EVA. Featuring breathtaking voices with roots in Australia, Ireland, the UK & the USA, EVA performs a seamless mix of traditional and contemporary original folk music. For this special holiday show, Kath Buckell, Liz Simmons and Melissa McMillan will lend their three distinct voices to songs that mark the holiday season. Blending the sounds of the piano, guitar, percussion, and harmonious vocals, they meld their worldly sensibilities with time-honored musical traditions.
Tickets for all the shows are on sale now at www.bit.ly//MaritimeConcerts. For more information about the Maritime Concert Series, please contact Sherrod Sturrock at 410-326-2042, ext. 32.
